To cut or not to cut?

A woman receiving a haircut at a Mackay hairdressers.

How often do we oscillate between ‘do we’ or ‘don’t we’ … cut our hair shorter, or keep growing it forever?

We dive deep back into the past of what suited us back in high school, or that time we got that really bad fringe - never again. We carry these battle scars, and don’t embrace who and what we are now.

Have you ever associated your favourite hairstyle with a particular time in your life where you were happier, or life was absolutely more fabulous than you could imagine and you related this to having that particular haircut?

There is a couple of ways you can look at this.

Hair is not attached to emotion or feelings, but more of a representation of what you are right now, at this very point in time.

So if you are getting a haircut to get ignited, then you possibly could be on the money, as you may have outgrown your current style.

Ever felt like you were on the verge of change and then you start chatting to others about it, and suddenly you get caught in a mind set of thinking “I have no idea what I want now”.

Why do we look to others, when we have already felt to move on and step into a different style? Have a chat to your hair stylist, bring some pics or ideas of what you are wanting, but if you ask everyone you know in your immediate circle you will likely get their opinions rather than your sense of what is needed for your next hair cut.

Now let’s clarify what we mean by change..

The big chop

You have mountains of hair, and you just need to minimise and feel refreshed. It’s weighing you down, and it needs to go. A new style will feel lightweight in comparison to what you have been carrying around. If this sounds like you, embrace the moment.

Mini haircut (but it’s actually a maxi)

So your perception of a ‘big chop’ means you have to cut off several inches of hair to clarify a “big chop”? Not so, you could cut an inch of your hair all over and change the design line. This can change the angle in which your hair sits, so for some it might be square, and others it might have more of a diagonal line. Whichever it is, this can change your style quite considerably without taking much length off.

The fairy trim

I once worked with an apprentice , and she introduced me to ‘fairy trims’. Now this was eye opening, how can 1 mm make all the difference in a haircut? After doing many fairy trims, I can conclude that it is quite extra-ordinary what this does for someone’s hair. You know the saying ‘get rid of the dead ends’? The 1mm is no longer needed and refreshes the hair instantly.

So if you are feeling to have the chop, what’s stopping you? Crash tackle the thoughts in your head, and front foot the style you have wanted, but weren’t daring enough to try.
