"How often should I get my hair cut?" It is a question posed by many, looking for the preferred answer by their stylist.
We also often hear the statement, “I know I need to cut off more than 1 cm to get any benefit out of a haircut.”
Let’s break this down…firstly what is the benefit of getting a haircut?
As a studio we wanted to share with you the benefits of what having a haircut offers you, it is way more than just cutting the ends off your hair.
When you come into the studio for any services, it’s a space to unwind, get some time to yourself, and completely relax. Some would say, they forget the world outside when they step inside at the studio. Commonly, we don’t get a moment to stop in our day to day activities, from the moment we open our eyes we are on the go, and don’t stop until our head hits the pillow at night. Literally, hits the pillow, as we go to bed with the exhaustion and drive from our day to get it all done. I hear you…
There is another way, and at For The Love Of Hair, we give you the space to do whatever it is for you in that moment, sometimes it is to have a chat, other times it might be to close your eyes and relax, and then there is moments when we have to complete work deadlines so we multi task whilst nurturing ourselves.
As you can see from all of this, I haven’t even mentioned why we need to get our haircut often… It has regular benefits for our hair including preventing split ends, maintaining the health of the hair, promoting new hair growth, improving the thickness of the hair, and preventing messy situations with knots that are avoidable due to the frizziness of damaged hair.
Why cut your hair?
Have you ever felt lighter after your haircut, walking out the door with a spring in your step ready to tackle whatever is ahead of you? Your time at the Spa area is a moment to let go of the past days/months tension and enter a new era. No need to take that with you again when you leave. You can see all of this gives you the space to sit and stop. No chance of running around whilst getting a haircut is there?
Having someone else attend to your hair and nurturing it from scalp to ends is a service to yourself. I had this experience myself a few weeks ago, when I wanted to take off the very tips of my hair, and it was like a weight had been lifted off my head. It boosted me into styling my hair a little differently as it had more volume and replenished my body to get on with the rest of the day/night tasks. You could say we don’t have time, but it is on us to make the time and give ourselves the space to nurture ourselves.
The ‘1cm rule’ myth busted
Next time you think of just taking 1mm off, realise you are saying a big yes to maintaining your shape and style, removing any damage which may have been caused, therefore contributing to making it easier for you to manage your hair on a daily basis. Even taking a single mm off can contribute to the health of your hair because it can prevent split ends before they happen.
How often should you get your hair cut? The answer is….there is no right answer.
How often you cut your hair is largely due to maintaining hair health. There is no right or wrong answer here, and most sources will tell you 6-8 weeks.
We have guests that get their hair done every 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 , 8 or 12 weeks.
Some of our frequent visitors also opt for a hair treatment when they don’t they want or need a haircut because they value their time at the Studio…and they love the extra-long head massages they get at the basin 😊.
As you can see there is no right or wrong, but generally You are the best person to check in with, as you know what works best for your hair from experience, as you are the one managing your hair on a daily basis. We as hairdressers, are the supporters, providing you with fabulous styles and guidance along the way, so you can walk out the door equipped with all the confidence and simple styling tips you need, until next time we meet.
